The creamy-white bloom of the magnolia tree was designated the state flower of Louisiana in 1900 because of the abundance of trees throughout the state. The scientific name for flowering plants is angiosperm, which means “seed bearing” from the Greek angos meaning “box” and sperm, “seed”, which comes from the ancient root “sper-”, meaning to scatter, from which we also get “sprout”.
